The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has condemned sensational reports about its forthcoming leadership election, urging the media to desist from spreading baseless claims that could disrupt the union’s stability.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Secretary-General, Comrade Oniha Erazua, and Head of Public Relations, Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, MWUN debunked allegations made in a recent publication by Ships & Ports magazine, describing the report as misleading and harmful to the maritime sector.
The union expressed disappointment over the publication titled “MWUN Presidency: Eight Aspirants Jostle to Succeed Adeyanju Amidst Government, Financial Influences”, stating that no such list of aspirants exists as campaign activities only commenced on January 6, 2025.
“The attention of MWUN has been drawn to an article that speculates on the upcoming leadership election. We wish to clarify that the ban on campaigns was only lifted recently, and no aspirant has officially declared their intention,” the statement read.
The union emphasized that its election process is governed by its constitution, which ensures a transparent, free, and fair delegates’ conference. It debunked claims that government influence or financial inducements will dictate the outcome of the election.
“MWUN remains a democratically run organization guided by its constitution. Any claim suggesting financial inducement or external influence in our election is both laughable and baseless,” Erazua and Ikemefuna added.
The statement further criticized the publication for suggesting that past leaders influence the union’s electoral process. MWUN insisted that its leadership is determined solely through democratic means, devoid of external interference.
“We take strong exception to the insinuation that past leaders interfere in the union’s electoral process. Such claims undermine the spirit of discipline and respect for rules that have guided our union for years,” the statement noted.
The union, however, appreciated the recognition given to the incumbent President-General, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, for maintaining neutrality and promoting a level playing field for all contestants.
MWUN cautioned media outlets to prioritize accuracy in their reportage, warning against heating up the maritime sector with unverified stories.
“We urge media practitioners to ensure their reports are accurate and impartial. MWUN’s leadership election is not a political circus but a structured process that reflects the will of our members,” the statement said.
The union assured members that it remains committed to a smooth leadership transition that will prioritize their welfare and uphold industrial peace in the maritime sector.
In conclusion, MWUN called for unity among members and urged journalists to refrain from divisive narratives, stressing its commitment to transparency and equity in its electoral process.
