The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says it generates more than 80 per cent of its annual revenue from Lagos, Ogun, Ondo and Oyo States. The four states are located in the south-west geopolitical zone of the country.

This was revealed in a report obtained by Point News247 from an investigation conducts by Ships and Ports news.

The Nigeria Customs Service derives its revenue from import and excise duties.

Customs data shows that the four south-west states account for 80.48% of NCS revenue. Lagos alone accounts for 75.975% while Ogun, Ondo and Oyo contribute 1.249%, 0.004% and 3.142%.

Also, the south-west alone hosts 14 of the 36 Customs Area Commands in the country. The Area Commands and the chunk of revenue they generate into Customs coffers annually are Apapa (30.359%), PTML (11.911%), Tin Can (25.367%), Tin Can II (1.143%), Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (1.502%) and Lagos Industrial (1.065%). Others are Murtala Muhammed Cargo (4.211%), Murtala Muhammed International (0.04%), Seme (0.377%), Ogun I (0.007%), Ogun II (1.242%), Ondo (0.004%), Oyo (3.142%) and the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A (0.11%).

Customs Area Commands in the south-south zone come a distant second to the south-west in revenue generation. The five Area Commands spread across the six states in the region collectively generate 14.854% of the NCS revenue. The commands are Cross River/Akwa Ibom (0.816%), Delta/Edo (1.643%), Oil & Gas (1.225%), Port Harcourt I (4.16%) and Port Harcourt II Onne (7.01%).

The NCS generates its least revenue from the north-east geopolitical zone, consisting of Adaawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Tarama and Yobe states. Collectively, the zone accounts for a paltry 0.033% of the revenue of Nigeria Customs Service. The Customs Area Commands in the region are Adamawa, which collects 0.011% of the NCS annual revenue, Bauchi/Gombe (0%), Borno/Yobe (0.011%) and FOU Zone D (0.011%).

The north-central zone also generates a dismal 1.014% in Customs revenue; north-west 1.788% and south-east 1.83%.

The north-central region consists of Benue/Nasarawa/Plateau Area Command (0%), FCT Abuja Command (0.612%), Kwara Command (0.402%) and Niger/Kogi (0%).

The north-west zone consists of Kano/Jigawa Area Command (1.02%), Kaduna Area Command (0.562%), Katsina Area Command (0.01%), Kebbi/Zamfara Area Command (0.031%), Sokoto Area Command (0.073%) and FOU Zone B, Kaduna (0.092%).

The south-east zone consists of Abia/Imo Area Command (0.709%), Enugu/Anambra/Ebonyi Area Command (1.118 %) and FOU Zone C, Owerri (0.003%).

The data shows that about 97.2 per cent of the annual revenue of the Nigeria Customs Service is generated from the southern part of the country while a paltry 2.8 per cent is generated in all the 19 states in the north and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.

The data further shows that of the two trillion Naira revenue the NCS expects to realize this year; a whopping N1.61 trillion is expected to be generated in the south-west; N264.2 billion from the south-south and N36.53 billion from the south-east.

The Service also expects to generate N35.35 billion in the north-west, N20.21 billion in north-central and an insignificant N662 million from the north-east.

The highest revenue generating command is Apapa where the NCS expects to generate more than N600 billion this year while the least is Bauchi/Gombe with a projected revenue of one million naira.
