The Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters, has been commended for their effort in seeking justice for victims of police brutality.
This commendation is coming from former Lagos State Governorship aspirant, Jimi Agbaje, who applauded the Panel for the report it submitted to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to him, credit must be given to members of the panel for their uprightness in speaking bitter truth to power.
Point News247 reports that the comment was made via his verified Facebook account on Tuesday, following the submission of the report to Governor Sanwo-Olu.
Since the content of the report became public knowledge on Monday, November 16, which confirmed that the Nigerian Army and police shot at and killed over 40 unarmed protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate among other atrocities, Nigerians have taken to various social media platforms to make their opinion known.
Many have condemned the government for its involvement in the avoidable deaths, and the cover-ups and denials that followed.
Agbaje, a three-time Governorship aspirant in the state in 2007, 2015 and 2019 stressed that the usage of the word “massacre” by an officially endorsed enquiry is “very deep”.
The renowned Pharmacist added that government must be accountable and punish those that were involved in the killings of October 20, 2020 at the Lekki Toll Gate.
In his words: “There was a ‘massacre’.Credit must be given to members of the Judicial Panel of Enquiry on the EndSARS protest for their uprightness in speaking bitter truth to power.”
“The word MASSACRE has been used by an officially endorsed enquiry. Very deep.”
Agbaje added that government must be accountable and punish those that were involved in the killings of October 20, 2020 at the Lekki Toll Gate.
“We now await the response of Government in bringing to book all those found culpable in the massacre that took place. There MUST be commensurate consequences!”
The United Nations (UN) and the United States of America have also urged the government to implement the stated recommendations of the panel, and address grievances of victims and families affected by police brutality.
