Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has endorsed a grassroots movement with a target of 2 million votes for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general election.
The governor personally led members of the State Executive Council (Exco), including Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, to a conference organised by the group”Asiwaju Grassroots Talk (AGT), where he canvassed support for the group’s political advocacy and its voter mobilisation strategy across local communities in Lagos.
The event, with the theme: Political Evangelism: Raising Active Voters Above 50 Per Cent was held at 10 Degrees Event Centre in Oregun, Ikeja.
The group is mobilising for the victory of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the APC presidential candidate and working to ensure the continuity of the progressives’ government in Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu said his endorsement of the AGT advocacy project stemmed from its proven ability to influence and mobilise real voters, noting that AGT had a strong presence across communities in Lagos.
He said: “We are ready to take the gospel to the electorate and canvass support for the Tinubu presidency. Asiwaju has verifiable track records in good governance and service delivery, which canvassers can use to engage and win the support of potential voters.
“We must talk about the transformative leadership, progressive ideals and vision possessed by Asiwaju to take this country to another level of meaningful development.
“Asiwaju Tinubu is coming to bring hope and change that will translate to real prosperity. He is coming to address the challenges facing the youth, women and the vulnerable in our country. His programmes will touch the lives of traders, artisans and those in search of legitimate means of livelihood. It is because of our strong belief in Asiwaju’s leadership that we are all coming together to endorse this grassroots movement to ensure Lagos is delivered for APC…”
He stated that, the ruling party would face an “important election” next year that would further strengthen it to deliver more dividends of good governance to Lagosians and other Nigerians.
AGT Director-General AbdulHakeem Tugbobo said the group was formed in 2018 to drive community advocacy and educate voters at the grassroots about Asiwaju Tinubu’s vision and political philosophy.
According to him, the group aligned itself with the progressive ideals of the APC, given the various development goals achieved by the party, especially in Lagos.
Also, a group of youths from the 19 states in northern Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), under the auspices of 100 Per Cent Focus Movement, is mobilising support for Asiwaju Tinubu and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima.
The group’s National Coordinator Labib Mahmood in an interview with journalists, said the movement was formed to sensitise northerners on the need to vote for Asiwaju Tinubu and Senator Shettima next year.
He said: “While the challenges facing my people are enormous, a social organisation would not be able to make much impact without collaboration with partners.
“Three organisations partnered with us to float a foundation and we realised that the problem with Nigeria is lack of purposeful leadership.
“We started beaming our searchlight on leaders who had shown capacity to provide quality and purposeful leadership, hence we settled for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
