The permanent secretary, ministry of transportation, engineer Adbul-Afeez Gholahan Toriola says plans are underway to reduce the number of private vehicles on Lagos roads

Engineer Toriola disclosed this Friday, when league of women en media(LWM) paid him a courtesy visit in his office at Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

Interacting with the female journalists, the Helmsman at the ministry of transport, explained different plans to ease traffic congestion in the commercial nerve center.

He stated that,”By the time we finish our blue and red lane in which the red is from Alagbado to Ido and the blue is from marina to mile 2 for a start, the second phase is from mile 2 down to Okokomaiko in lekki drive and we have enough buses that we are planing and we are coming up with some measures to contain congestion.

We are going to deal with the number of buses on our roads because no matter the number of roads you construct,if you don’t control the use of private vehicles, you will continue to have congestion,if you have been to developed countries like London, especially central London, you will pay what is called “congestion charges”, the essence is just reduce to reduce the number of private cars on the road”

That is why LAMATA was designed to come up with once you come to reduce number of vehicles on the road, let us personalised our own buses”

Worthy of note, is that, LAMATA was established to provide a strategic planning platform to address long neglected transport needs of the metropolis and coordinate activities of the different executing agencies to provide a common and consistent basis for implementation

“When you go to USA too, they will tell you high occupants vehicle, they are trying to reduce the number of private vehicles in that corridor.

He also stated that,” once we get our blue and red rail into operation,we will now come up with those measures so that it makes our work and plans are reliable safe, efficient and secured”.

If you are going to the island and you have not pay for our congestion, pls go and join our bus system through the rail either red or blue depending on where you are coming from”.

He maintained that, government can not do it all alone same as build enough roads adding that in other climes, government only try to reduce the number of private vehicles.

According to him, the use of vehicles also comes with some challenges which is Pollution,” in those days when we were small, we don’t see rain in august but now we are seeing it,it is Pollution that is affecting the ozone layer some, what is causing climate change, its Pollution”.
