The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) has kicked off its 5th Biennial Conference and Awards in grand style, bringing together industry leaders, stakeholders, and policymakers to deliberate on the future of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
Speaking at the event, the outgoing AMJON President, Paul Ogbuokiri, highlighted the significance of this year’s edition.
“This year is special because we are inducting a new Patron, Dr. Paul Adalikwu, whose sterling leadership as Secretary General of the Maritime Organisation of West and Central Africa (MOWCA) has redefined maritime governance in the region. This induction will be conducted by our current Patron, Chief Tony Iju Nwabunike,” Ogbuokiri said.
The event also marks the end of tenure for the current AMJON executives, with a new leadership team, headed by Mr. Kelvin Kagbare, set to take charge for the next three years.
Ogbuokiri expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria’s maritime sector under the renewed focus of the federal government.
“With the creation of the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry, the appointment of a Minister, and the introduction of new CEOs across agencies, we expect the industry to be repositioned for growth. Our hope is to see significant local and foreign investment, modernization of ports, and increased cargo throughput to solidify Nigeria’s position as a hub for maritime activities in West and Central Africa,” he said.
He commended efforts to eliminate piracy and traffic congestion around Lagos ports but called for further improvements in the ease of doing business and rapid modernization of port infrastructure.
The event celebrated key players in the maritime sector with awards for their contributions in 2023.
“To our awardees, I urge you to strive to surpass the milestones that earned you this recognition. As the saying goes, ‘to whom much is given, much is expected,’” Ogbuokiri stated.
In his closing remarks, Ogbuokiri praised Chief Tony Nwabunike for his unwavering support and congratulated Dr. Paul Adalikwu on his induction as Patron. He pledged continued support for the incoming AMJON executives.
“I encourage the new leaders to build on our achievements and take this association to greater heights. Like my predecessor, Ismail Aniemu, supported me, I will remain committed to your success,” he said.
The conference theme, “Nigeria’s Blue Economy Industry under the Renewed Hope Agenda: What is New?” set the tone for insightful discussions, with maritime experts expected to chart a new course for Nigeria’s Blue Economy.
