Governor Oborevwori Hails Football as a Tool for Unity and Youth Empowerment

Udumurhie FC has emerged victorious in the 2024 Osubi Unity Cup, clinching the title after defeating Team Elite in a nail-biting penalty shootout on Sunday at the Osubi Community Secondary School field.

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, was among the enthusiastic spectators who witnessed the thrilling finale. The match ended in a goalless draw after 90 minutes, with Udumurhie triumphing 7-6 on penalties to lift the trophy.

Speaking to journalists, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Roy Uruemu, highlighted the significance of the annual tournament, now in its fourth edition.
“This competition celebrates our unity, oneness, and peace as a community. It has also become an important end-of-year tradition for the Osubi people, blending sports with communal harmony,” Uruemu said.

He revealed that this year’s competition involved 288 young men across 12 teams, including three guest teams. “While it is primarily a local football event, we invite guest teams to add more excitement and competitiveness. Team Elite, the runners-up, is one of those guest teams,” he added.

The Governor’s son, Sheriff Oborevwovri Junior, the tournament organizer, rewarded two of his loyal supporters, Omonigho Francis Agbinone and Paul Idike, with brand-new Corolla cars for their dedication and contributions to the event’s success.

Former Super Eagles legend Victor Ikpeba, a special guest at the final, praised the initiative.
“I grew up in Sapele, not far from here, and I remember playing community football as a young boy. It’s commendable that the Governor’s son is giving back to the community through this competition,” Ikpeba said.

He added, “This is an opportunity to inspire young players and expose them to scouts and agents. Football has the power to unite and transform communities. Without football, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

The Osubi Unity Cup has continued to grow as a platform for nurturing talent and strengthening community ties, solidifying its place as a major event in Delta State’s sporting calendar.
