NLNG Champions Energy Security and Sustainable Growth at NIES 2025

Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) has reiterated the importance of prioritizing energy security and sustainability in Nigeria’s quest for economic growth and development. This call to action was made by Philip Mshelbila, NLNG’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), during a panel session at the 8th Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES) in Abuja.

Mshelbila noted that while improvements have been recorded in securing oil assets, gas infrastructure remains vulnerable. He stressed that without adequate protection, the industry will underperform, leading to significant economic losses and undermining Nigeria’s ability to meet its energy needs.

To address this challenge, NLNG is focused on boosting domestic and regional energy access through smaller-scale investments that retain more gas for local consumption. A significant step towards achieving this goal is NLNG’s decision to domesticate 100% of its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supply for the Nigerian market.

This move is expected to have a positive impact on the economy, as it will increase the availability of LPG for domestic use, reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuel, and create jobs in the energy sector. Additionally, NLNG is working to enhance regional energy security by constructing a third jetty as part of the Train 7 project.

This new infrastructure will support small-scale vessels in supplying gas across Africa’s coastal markets, further solidifying Nigeria’s position as a major player in the global energy market. Furthermore, NLNG is supporting the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) in connecting Bonny Island to the mainland to facilitate LPG trucking, thereby strengthening domestic gas distribution.

This initiative is expected to boost West Africa’s energy distribution network, positioning NLNG as a key player in the region’s energy landscape. Mshelbila emphasized the need for clear and consistent regulatory frameworks to attract long-term investments in the energy sector.

He highlighted NLNG’s commitment to local content and sustainability, which aligns with global energy transition priorities. By proactively reducing methane emissions, investing in low-carbon innovations, and implementing impactful social initiatives, NLNG is building investor confidence and demonstrating long-term sustainability.

As Nigeria continues to navigate the challenges of energy security and sustainability, NLNG remains committed to playing a leading role in shaping the country’s energy future. By prioritizing energy security, sustainability, and regional cooperation, NLNG is helping to create a brighter future for Nigeria and the wider African region.
