On April 15, 2025, the Maritime Police Command welcomed a delegation from the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) for a significant courtesy visit aimed at fostering collaboration and improving maritime security. The meeting, held at the Command Headquarters, was led by AIG Musa Yusuf Garba, who emphasized the vital role of the media in shaping public perception and supporting law enforcement efforts.

During the visit, AMJON President Mr. Kelvin Kagbare commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for the ongoing initiatives to enhance policing within Nigeria’s maritime sector. Kagbare highlighted the importance of this interaction as a platform for dialogue between the press and the Maritime Police, aimed at ensuring responsible reporting and accurate dissemination of information.

In his address, AIG Garba expressed gratitude for the visit and reinforced the Command’s commitment to transparency and accountability. He outlined the structure and responsibilities of the Maritime Police, which includes oversight of both the Western and Eastern Port Authority Police. Garba reiterated the Command’s primary mission: to safeguard lives and property within Nigeria’s maritime domain, combat criminal activities, and maintain order on the waterways.

Garba urged journalists to play an active role in countering misinformation and verifying facts before publication, stating that a credible media landscape is essential for boosting investor confidence and promoting economic growth. He issued a stern warning to criminal elements operating in the maritime sector, declaring a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption and impunity.

The meeting concluded with a pledge from AIG Garba to maintain open lines of communication with the media, fostering a collaborative approach to enhancing maritime security and contributing to national development. This proactive engagement between the Maritime Police and journalists marks a promising step toward a more secure and prosperous maritime environment in Nigeria.
