SWEEP Foundation, ASWAMA, ASWRA, Mark World Environment Day in Anambra State. By Uzor Odigbo

Following effort to promote waste management, the Statewide Waste and Environmental Education Foundation (SWEEP) in collaboration with the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA), Anambra Waste Recyclers Association (ASWRA), and Ministry of Environment organized a two-day event to mark World Environment Day 2025.

The event, themed “Citizens and Corporate Participation as a Solution to Plastic Pollution,” aimed to raise awareness about the devastating impact of plastic waste on the environment, health, and economy.

The One-day symposium was held in Awka, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss environmental issues and sustainability.

Amb. Obuesi Phillips, Chairman ASWRA Board/Urban Waste Dynamics Ltd, emphasized the need for collective action to reduce plastic waste, promote sustainable practices, and advocate for environmental policies.

The occasion also witnessed “Cash for Trash” community sensitization programme was held at Igwebuike Grammar School.

The programme encouraged residents to recycle plastic waste, which was purchased at a premium rate of N400/kg.

This initiative is to promote behavioral change and encourage residents to adopt sustainable waste management practices.

Beverage firm, Coca-Cola demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability by donating 10 plastic waste collection receptacles to the Ministry of Environment and ASWAMA.

This gesture will enhance waste management infrastructure in the state and promote sustainable practices.

Ambassador Obuesi Phillips, President/CEO of SWEEP Foundation also stated that the event was part of a triangle programme to commemorate World Environment Day, promote the “Cash for Trash” campaign, and donate recycling bins to the state government.

He emphasized that the “Cash for Trash” campaign, funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation and supported by the State Ministry of Environment, ASWAMA, and ASWRA, would preach behavioral change and promote a clean, green, and sustainable Anambra State.

“The World has seen the devastating effects of plastic waste on our environment, health, and economy. We gather to celebrate our collective efforts to solve it.”
The Statewide Waste and Environmental Education Foundation (SWEEP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting waste management and environmental sustainability in Anambra State.
