The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has congratulated the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) on Nigeria’s successful re-election into Category ‘C’ of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, describing the feat as a major milestone for the nation’s maritime industry.

The commendation was given during a courtesy visit by the President-General of MWUN, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, alongside members of the union’s executive, to the Managing Director of the NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, at the Authority’s Marina headquarters in Lagos.

Comrade Bunu said Nigeria’s victory at the IMO, achieved under the leadership of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, reflects the country’s growing influence in global maritime governance and renewed confidence in its maritime administration.

He described the outcome as laudable and a significant boost to the advancement of the sector.

He also used the opportunity to reaffirm MWUN’s commitment to stronger collaboration with the NPA, noting that effective partnership between organised labour and port management is critical to the sustainable growth and competitiveness of Nigeria’s maritime industry.

The MWUN President-General stressed that the union and the NPA remain strategic partners in progress whose shared objectives can only be realised through regular engagement and mutual understanding.

In his response, Dr. Dantsoho thanked the MWUN leadership for the gesture and the goodwill expressed, assuring them of the Authority’s readiness to deepen cooperation with the union.

He emphasised the importance of industrial harmony and collective effort in driving the Federal Government’s Marine and Blue Economy agenda.

Dr. Dantsoho reiterated NPA’s commitment to working closely with MWUN and other stakeholders to improve port efficiency and position Nigeria as a leading maritime hub both within the region and globally.
