The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has clarified that it is not involved in the National Association of Nigerian Students’ (NANS) proposed ₦200 student levy and has no agreement with the association linking the payment to mobilisation for national service.
In a statement issued on 11 August 2026, NYSC said it had not discussed, agreed to, or signed any Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NANS for the collection of any levy related to mobilisation. The scheme described circulating reports titled “NANS Moves to Collect N200 Levy from Nigerian Students, Links Dues to NYSC Mobilisation” as false and urged students and the public to disregard them.
NYSC explained that it operates under Federal Government authority and implements only policies and procedures approved by the appropriate government bodies. The mobilisation process is conducted through established official channels and involves cooperation between NYSC management and the heads of corps-producing institutions (CPIs), who submit graduate information for mobilisation.
“Mobilisation is not connected to and does not depend on the activities of any student association or organisation,” the statement said.
The scheme advised prospective corps members and students to ignore suggestions that payment of a levy to NANS or any other group is required for NYSC mobilisation. It reiterated its commitment to a transparent, credible and efficient mobilisation process in line with existing government policies and guidelines.
The clarification follows a proposal by NANS leadership for an annual ₦200 membership levy for students, with indications that payment of the dues could eventually be linked to mobilisation for the NYSC scheme. However, no formal arrangement has been established, and NYSC has disowned any such linkage.
