The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria’s (MWUN) representative to the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) Youth Regional Conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Comrade Olumba Maduabuchukwu has been commended for his outstanding performance.

The conference, which brought together young maritime and transport workers from selected African countries, was hosted at the Ramada by Wyndham Hotel, Dar es Salaam.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Head of Media, MWUN, Comrade John Ikemefuna on Tuesday.

Participants included representatives from Sierra Leone, Ghana, Malawi and other African nations. Comrade Olumba, a member of the Seafarers Unit of MWUN, distinguished himself during the Maritime Regional Young Workers’ Workshop and reportedly emerged in flying colours at the end of the evaluation exercise.

On his return to Nigeria, Comrade Olumba was warmly received by the leadership of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria, led by the President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi.

Commending his performance, Bunu stressed the importance of exposing young union members to international trainings and capacity-building programmes, noting that such initiatives are crucial to grooming a new generation of effective union leaders.

According to the MWUN President-General, the Union remains committed to sustained training and development programmes for its youthful members, describing such engagement as a continuous exercise aimed at strengthening the future of the Union.

Comrade Bunu underscored the value of engaging young comrades through strategic courses, workshops, trainings and international conferences. He described these opportunities as essential for building lasting legacies within the labour movement.

On his part, Comrade Olumba thanked the MWUN leadership for granting him the opportunity to participate in the Tanzania conference, describing the event as an eye-opener that exposed him to new knowledge and fostered valuable interactions with vibrant young African unionists.

He further praised the conference facilitators for their professionalism, describing them as excellent, instructive, intelligent and morally sound. He added that the lessons learned during the workshop would remain impactful and help advance his development in the maritime sector.
