The Commander of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps, Attah Onoja has been honoured with the National Economic Security Defender of the Year award for 2025.
The award, conferred by Daily Global Newspaper is in recognition of his outstanding contributions to protecting the nation’s solid mineral resources.
The award followed a rigorous assessment process involving security experts, industry stakeholders and civil society observers, who cited ACC Onoja’s strategic leadership and operational impact in strengthening enforcement across Nigeria’s mining sector.
Under his command, the Mining Marshals operating within the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have intensified surveillance and enforcement, curtailed illegal mining activities, and improved compliance with national resource management and safety standards. These efforts have been credited with safeguarding public revenue and reinforcing economic security.
Industry professionals and security analysts praised ACC Onoja’s innovative enforcement strategies and institutional reforms, noting measurable reductions in illegal mining and improved coordination among regulators. His approach emphasises collaboration with local communities and federal agencies, frameworks observers say have enhanced transparency and accountability in the sector.
According to Daily Global Newspaper, the honour goes beyond individual achievement, representing national recognition of leadership that directly supports economic security and sustainable development.
The publication described the award as a reflection of disciplined, strategic enforcement at a time when Nigeria is seeking to leverage its natural resources to drive industrialisation and long-term growth.
The organisers added that the honour underscores ACC Onoja’s professionalism and enduring commitment to public service, while highlighting the critical importance of protecting Nigeria’s mineral wealth for present and future generations.
