In a befitting tribute to the contributions of female officers to the development of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, held a surprise appreciation event to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day.
The event, held at the Customs House in Maitama on Friday, March 27, 2026, was attended by a large crowd of officers across ranks, as well as members of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA). Each attendee was presented with a rose in recognition of their resilience, commitment, and service to the nation.
While addressing the officers, CGC Adeniyi stated that the gathering was deliberately designed to depart from routine ceremonies and place the spotlight on women whose efforts often go unrecognised.
“I know you did not come here expecting this. That is exactly the point. Too often, recognition comes only when it is convenient or when it fits neatly into a calendar. Today, we chose to do something different,” he said.
Adeniyi acknowledged the Service’s paramilitary structure, noting that while tradition and hierarchy remain important, the moment serves as an opportunity to reflect on the role of women within the institution.
“This is a paramilitary organisation, and we are guided by tradition and protocol. But today, we are united by a common purpose, which is to celebrate the women of the Nigeria Customs Service,” he remarked.
The Customs boss also described female officers as indispensable to the Service’s operations, commending their professionalism and dedication across various formations. “You are central to what we do. I want to appreciate all of you serving in different capacities across the country for your resilience and commitment to duty.”
He added that the initiative was aimed at recognising outstanding women in the Service and reinforcing the need to sustain a culture that values hard work and dedication irrespective of gender.
In her remarks, the National President of COWA and wife of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Kikelomo Adeniyi, described the gathering as a significant moment to celebrate the strength and contributions of women within the Customs community.
“This is indeed a special occasion for us to recognise the resilience, dedication, and hard work of women who continue to support the Service both directly and indirectly.”
She commended the CGC for his consistent support for women, stressing that his leadership has created opportunities for growth and inclusion within the Service.
“Our women are not just supporting actors; they are active contributors to the progress we are recording as a Service. Through various initiatives, we have continued to empower women and families, and this aligns with the broader reform agenda of the Nigeria Customs Service,” Kikelomo said.
She also highlighted the association’s role in promoting welfare and empowerment programmes, reiterating that investing in women remains critical to building stronger institutions and communities.
