The new Area Controller of the Tincan Island Port Command, Comptroller JA Anani, has promised a more open and collaborative relationship with the media as he begins his tenure at the command.
Speaking during his maiden engagement with journalists on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, Anani said the meeting was designed to strengthen understanding and cooperation between the command and stakeholders in the maritime sector. He described the press as a strategic partner in shaping public perception, promoting accountability, and supporting compliance.
Anani said the media would play a central role in his administration and would be fully carried along in the command’s policies, operations, reforms, and achievements. He said the command would ensure a timely, accurate, and transparent flow of information to enable journalists to report effectively.
He also said the command would support the media through training, sensitisation workshops, and capacity-building programmes. According to him, a better-informed press corps would improve reportage and deepen public understanding of customs operations and the challenges involved.
At the same time, the Area Controller urged journalists to maintain the highest standards of professionalism in their coverage of the command. He said responsible journalism was necessary to build public trust, prevent misinformation, and protect the integrity of the command’s work.
Anani said the command would continue to align with the Customs modernisation drive by strengthening systems, processes, and technology-based solutions that improve efficiency and trade facilitation at the port. He added that compliance with the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 would remain a key focus of his administration.
He noted that the command was already recording encouraging results in revenue generation, attributing the progress to the dedication of officers, better compliance, and improved operational efficiency. He said the command would consolidate on the gains and aim to surpass past achievements.
The new controller also thanked Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, PhD, for the confidence placed in him to lead the strategic command. He praised the Customs chief’s reform-driven leadership and commitment to repositioning the service for greater efficiency and global competitiveness.
Anani reaffirmed that Tincan Island Port Command remains open to constructive engagement with all stakeholders, especially the media, and said the Public Relations Unit would be strengthened to ensure press-related issues receive prompt attention. He said the unit would maintain close contact with journalists, provide timely updates, and help build mutual understanding between the command and the public.
