The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has announced the death of Comrade Chris Idagbonre, who passed away after a brief illness.

The Union’s Head of Media, Comrade John Ikemefuna disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

Comrade Idagbonre served the union for over 25 years and retired in 2025 as a Vice President-General (VPG). Before his retirement, he was widely regarded as a pragmatic and committed trade unionist.

His career began at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in Lagos, where he was a member of the NPA Branch of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria. Throughout his service, he maintained an unblemished record and was known for his dedication to labour matters.

Described as a committed executive member of the union, Comrade Idagbonre was recognised for his passion for humanity, his colleagues, contemporaries and union members.

The President-General of MWUN, Comrade Francis Bunu attested to his selfless service, noting that he was a dependable figure in matters of conflict resolution within the union.

The statement added that funeral arrangements will be announced later by his immediate family, and prayed that his gentle soul rests in perfect peace.
