The Presidency has awarded Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi an extra six months in his position, extending his service period until February 2027 to complete National Single Window consolidation and guarantee smooth leadership handover within the Nigeria Customs Service.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed this move through a Friday announcement, revealing that Adeniyi’s original extension was meant to conclude on August 1, 2026. Presidential officials granted the supplementary six-month period to ensure vital customs reforms achieve full operational status.

Throughout this transitional window, Adeniyi will partner with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to supervise major personnel operations, which include advancing qualified officers to Comptroller of Customs positions and enforcing mandatory exit for staff who have reached 60 years old or finished 35 years of employment.

The National Single Window platform, a digital trade facilitation system serving as the backbone of the government’s customs modernisation strategy, promises to boost revenue gathering, lower import-export processing expenses, and sharpen Nigeria’s standing in global commerce upon full implementation.

Adeniyi entered the Nigeria Customs Service following his late-1980s graduation from Obafemi Awolowo University, advancing through Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General by January 2023 before President Tinubu named him Comptroller-General in June 2023.

This appointment extension demonstrates the Presidency’s dedication to maintaining strategic consistency and organisational steadiness while Nigeria pushes forward its customs transformation efforts.
