Nigeria has begun development of a 200MW solar mini-grid, marking a major step toward improving electricity supply for industrial use and advancing the country’s clean energy transition.
The project was launched by the Ministers of Power, Steel Development and Industry, alongside Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and the leadership of Abuja Steel Mills Limited. The groundbreaking ceremony also included the formal handover of 500 hectares of land in Niger State to Abuja Steel Mills, a subsidiary of the African Industries Group.
The solar mini-grid is designed to power an industrial park that includes a steel plant, and it is being described as the largest embedded renewable power project of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa. The developers say the decision to build off-grid was deliberate and strategic, rather than a temporary response to grid challenges.
According to the project promoters, the installation is intended to provide clean and reliable electricity for one of the most energy-intensive industries in the region. They said the project demonstrates that renewable energy can serve as a commercial foundation for industrial growth rather than simply a support option.
The model is also expected to offer broader benefits by creating more predictable power costs for manufacturers and opening the possibility of distributing surplus energy to nearby communities. Supporters of the initiative say it could be replicated at other industrial sites across the country, especially in locations with strong solar potential.
Governor Bago’s land allocation was presented as a key part of the project’s success, showing how subnational governments can help unlock private investment in energy infrastructure. The presence of the Power Minister at the ceremony was also seen as evidence of federal support for distributed renewable power projects.
The project is expected to contribute to Nigeria’s wider industrial and energy goals under the Renewed Hope Agenda, which promotes clean energy, private capital participation and decentralized power generation. Officials say the 200MW solar mini-grid could become an important example of how industrial development and renewable energy can grow together.
