The President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has achieved another milestone with the resolution of the case surrounding the death of Comrade Okwuwa Chinedu Godwin, a member of the Union and an employee of GMS Recruitment Services Limited, who died on March 18, 2024, as a result of an illness contracted while on board a vessel.

The incident occurred in 2024, some years before the emergence of the current President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, who took up the matter with vigour, resilience, determination and a sense of purpose, pursuing it in line with labour laws to achieve the outcome now reached.

The Union said the resolution reflects the strength of its leadership under the current administration, noting that the late Comrade Godwin’s cause of death was directly tied to his engagement aboard the vessel where he was deployed by his employers.

Following MWUN’s intervention and negotiations with GMS Recruitment Services, the company adhered to the Union’s demands in favour of the late Comrade Godwin, in accordance with Protection and Indemnity (P&I) provisions.

Comrade Francis Bunu Abi thanked the management of GMS Recruitment Services for their understanding and cooperation throughout the matter, noting that human life matters regardless of the circumstances of death.

The family of the late Godwin also expressed appreciation to the MWUN leadership for how the matter was handled, describing the outcome as reasonable and amicable.
