The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has unveiled Revision 2 of the Nigerian Gas Transportation Network Code to strengthen transportation rules, improve market efficiency and support gas trade.

The Authority’s Chief Executive, Mr Rabiu Umar, launched the revised code on Monday at the 20th OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week 2026 in Lagos.

Umar said the revision introduced clearer provisions for gas measurement, nominations and transportation, providing a framework for greater transparency and better coordination among network users.

He noted that participation in the transportation network had expanded since the introduction of Revision 1, with more shippers joining the system.

According to him, imbalances on the western gas network have declined by 30 per cent since the earlier revision was introduced.

Umar stressed that effective transportation regulations were necessary to improve network operations and support the continued development of Nigeria’s gas market.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Mrs Olu Verheijen, highlighted the importance of gas to electricity generation, industrial growth and transportation.

Represented by Mrs Eriye Onagoruwa, Team Lead in the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Verheijen said regulatory certainty was essential to attracting investment into gas infrastructure.

She noted that predictable rules would encourage the financing needed to develop infrastructure and expand gas utilisation across the economy.

The Executive Vice-President, Downstream, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Dr Mumuni Dagazau, also called for greater investment in gas infrastructure to strengthen the country’s energy value chain.

Dagazau said closer coordination among industry stakeholders and stronger regional cooperation would support energy market integration and cross-border trade.

The Chairman of the OTL Africa Downstream Advisory Board, Mr Tunji Oyebanji, identified infrastructure development and efficient logistics as key requirements for strengthening Africa’s downstream energy markets.

He added that commercial partnerships among African countries could deepen regional energy trade and open up new investment opportunities.
