The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and Trade Modernisation Project Limited (TMPL) have completed technical tests on newly acquired cargo inspection and tracking equipment in China ahead of its shipment to Nigeria.

The Factory Acceptance Test covered Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) equipment and the Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS), which are designed to support cargo examination and real-time monitoring of consignments from ports to their destinations.

A delegation led by the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs in charge of Information Communication and Technology/Modernisation, Oluyomi Adebakin, conducted the exercise from October 9 to 20, 2026, at the facility of the manufacturer, Nuctech Company Limited.

The exercise involved detailed technical verification to establish whether the systems met contractual specifications and global operational standards before shipment.

Adebakin described the tests as a critical **quality-assurance** step in the Service’s drive to modernise its operations through technology.

She reaffirmed the commitment of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, to deploying equipment that would facilitate legitimate trade, strengthen revenue collection and enhance national security.

“The Nigeria Customs Service, under the leadership of CGC Adeniyi, is committed to ensuring that we deploy only cutting-edge, fit-for-purpose technology that will fast-track cargo examination, reduce dwell time, and enhance our ability to detect concealments and prohibited items, improve revenue generation, as well as facilitate legitimate trade,” she said.

The Acting Comptroller of Non-Intrusive Inspection, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Umar Madugu, said the scanners and tracking system were expected to reduce reliance on full physical examination of cargo.

He added that their deployment would minimise human contact, help curb cargo diversion and improve operational efficiency across Customs formations.

Speaking for TMPL, the company’s General Manager, Bamidele Chinedu, described the completion of the tests as a milestone in the implementation of the Trade Modernisation Project.

He said integrating the scanners with electronic cargo tracking was central to building a transparent, technology-driven Customs system.

Nuctech’s Project Manager, Niu Chao, also reaffirmed the manufacturer’s commitment to providing equipment, technical support, capacity building and after-sales services.

As part of the exercise, technical personnel from NCS and TMPL received training on operating and maintaining the scanners and tracking system to support deployment and long-term use in Nigeria.
