Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced a 50% petrol subsidy for farmers in insurgency-hit areas, reducing the pump price from N1,200 to N600 per litre.

Zulum made the announcement during the distribution of farm inputs to over 5,000 farmers in Bama town, a community previously displaced by Boko Haram insurgents.

“We understand the hardship our farmers face, especially with the rising cost of fuel for irrigation. This subsidy is part of our commitment to easing their burden and boosting agricultural productivity,” Zulum stated.

The governor flagged off the distribution of fertilizers, improved seeds, and pesticides to farmers in Bama as part of efforts to strengthen food security in the state.

Zulum also revealed plans to construct more tube wells to aid irrigation farming. “We have already built over 100 tube wells and will add another 250 to ensure our farmers can cultivate all year round,” he said.

The governor’s initiative is expected to revitalize farming activities and help farmers recover from the economic devastation caused by insurgency in Borno State.

A beneficiary, Malam Ali Modu, expressed gratitude for the government’s intervention, saying, “The subsidy will help us afford petrol for our water pumps and increase our crop yield.”

Governor Zulum urged farmers to utilize the resources effectively, assuring them of continued support from his administration. “Our government remains committed to improving the lives of our people through sustainable agricultural practices,” he added.

The subsidy is seen as a major step in addressing the challenges faced by farmers and ensuring food security in the insurgency-affected state.
