The 2026 edition of The Nigeria Prize for Literature has moved into the adjudication phase after NLNG formally handed over 223 entries to the Advisory Board and panel of judges in Lagos. The submission tally reflects robust participation, especially in the poetry category, remaining broadly in line with recent cycles and underscoring sustained interest in the Prize as a key pillar of Nigeria’s literary ecosystem.
Speaking at the press conference, the General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, NLNG, Dr. Sophia Horsfall, represented by Abdul Umar, Manager, Government Relations, NLNG, described the handover as the start of a rigorous process that will shape the year’s literary outcome. “This marks the start of a process that demands attention, patience, and sound judgement, and will ultimately determine the work that defines this year’s Prize,” she said.
The 2026 edition is dedicated to Poetry, with the $100,000 award regarded as one of Africa’s most prestigious literary honours. Dr. Horsfall highlighted the precision, depth, and clarity required in the form, noting that expectations have been shaped by strong previous winners, including the acclaimed 2022 edition whose work continues to influence contemporary Nigerian poetry. She reaffirmed NLNG’s commitment to maintaining a credible platform that supports literary excellence, builds reading culture, and reinforces the country’s creative and educational development.
Dr. Horsfall stressed that the Prize’s credibility hinges on the integrity of its adjudication, which involves months of close reading, evaluation, and deliberation before a longlist of eleven entries, a shortlist of three, and a final winner are selected.
The books were formally received by the Advisory Board, chaired by Professor Akachi Adimora‑Ezeigbo, who then transmitted them to the panel of judges for assessment in line with established standards. Professor Adimora‑Ezeigbo commended NLNG for its long‑standing support of the Prize and noted how each edition mirrors the growing depth and diversity of Nigerian writing across genres. She also thanked the writers whose submissions sustain the Prize’s relevance and urged the judges to exercise the highest professionalism and critical rigour in selecting the winner.
Sponsored annually by NLNG, The Nigeria Prize for Literature remains a flagship component of the company’s cultural and educational investment, widely recognised as a benchmark for literary excellence across Africa.
