Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has held high-level talks with Aliko Dangote on a new wave of potential Dangote Group investments in the country, covering transport infrastructure, fertilizer production, power generation, ports and regional trade.
The meeting, held at State House in Dar es Salaam, highlighted the long-standing relationship between Tanzania and the Dangote Group while opening discussions on projects tied to the country’s industrialisation and economic transformation plans.
Dangote said Tanzania remains a highly attractive investment destination for the group, adding that several areas had been identified for possible development in ways that would benefit both sides. The discussions included port expansion, a 40-kilometre concrete access road, a special trade zone, a proposed 2,000-megawatt coal-fired power plant, a urea fertilizer plant and transport links between Mtwara and Mbamba Bay.
He also addressed the Group’s decision to site its planned East African refinery in Lamu, Kenya, while inviting the Tanzanian government to take part in that investment.
President Samia welcomed Dangote Group’s continued interest in Tanzania and directed relevant ministries and agencies to begin technical discussions on the proposed projects in line with the country’s legal and development priorities. She also appointed the Minister of Planning and Investment to coordinate the partnership, with formal negotiations expected to begin soon.
A Tanzanian delegation is expected to visit Nigeria to advance talks and work out implementation plans for the proposed investments. The government said the partnership reflects its commitment to attracting private sector capital, accelerating industrialisation, promoting technology transfer and creating sustainable jobs.
Dangote Industries already has a major presence in Tanzania through its US$500 million cement plant in Mtwara, which has an annual capacity of three million tonnes and supplies both the local and regional markets.
