The management of the Nigeria Customs Service has welcomed Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi back to Abuja after what it described as a major boost to both his national and international leadership roles.
Adeniyi returned to the Service’s headquarters in Maitama on Monday, June 29, 2026, where officers and senior management received him warmly following his trip to Brussels. His visit to Belgium had marked the 147th and 148th sessions of the World Customs Organisation Council.
At the meeting, Adeniyi’s chairmanship of the WCO Council was renewed for another year, even though he had gone there expecting to hand over the position. The development came alongside the six-month extension of his appointment by President Bola Tinubu, further strengthening his hold on leadership within the Customs system.
The management team congratulated him on the dual milestones and presented him with a souvenir in recognition of his contributions to the growth and reform of the Nigeria Customs Service.
In his response, Adeniyi thanked the team for the show of support and described the gesture as a reflection of the unity within the Service. He said the outcome in Brussels came as a surprise, noting that he had gone there prepared to hand over the WCO chairmanship, only to be given another one-year mandate.
He dedicated the renewed trust to the entire Nigeria Customs Service, saying the result was a sign of confidence in the institution’s progress and reforms.
The renewed international assignment, together with the extension of his tenure in office, is expected to further support Customs’ reform agenda, deepen global cooperation and strengthen trade facilitation efforts.
