In a powerful and thought-provoking speech delivered at the Obidients Movement North East Leadership Summit, Dr. Yunusa Tanko emphasized the importance of Nigerian citizens understanding and asserting their fundamental rights. Tanko, who was recently named the Obidients’ Coordinator by Peter Obi, highlighted the need for citizens to demand good governance, transparency, and accountability from public office holders.

According to Tanko, every Nigerian citizen has the right to
Demand accountability and transparency from elected representatives

Speak out against injustice and oppression
Gather and associate with others to promote common interests
Receive a fair trial and equal treatment under the law.Live without fear of violence or intimidation

Be treated with respect and dignity by public officials
Move freely and associate with others without restriction
Travel freely within and outside the country

Right to Freedom from Discrimination*: Be treated equally and without prejudice

Tanko also stressed the importance of citizens participating in the electoral process, saying, “You have the right to fully participate in the electoral process of choosing your leaders; it is a clarion and sacred call.” He emphasized that citizens must exercise their right to vote and hold their leaders accountable for their actions.

In addition, Tanko highlighted the need for citizens to be aware of their rights and to assert them responsibly. He said, “Awareness of one’s rights is critical for their realization. Citizens who are aware of their rights are better able to assert and claim them and are more likely to hold the state and its agencies accountable for their obligations.

Tanko also emphasized the importance of civil society organizations, including non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, and faith-based organizations, in promoting and protecting the fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens. He said that these organizations provide a platform for citizens to assert and claim their rights and to hold the state and its agencies accountable for their obligations.

In conclusion, Tanko urged Nigerians to recognize their power and authority as citizens, saying, “You are the real CEO of Nigeria; fire the bad guys and hire the good guys.” He emphasized that citizens must take an active role in demanding good governance, transparency, and accountability from their leaders.
