FirstBank Bets Big on Staff Growth as It Builds Future Banking Leaders

FirstBank is making its people the heart of its growth strategy, rolling out a suite of initiatives that are turning ordinary employees into future leaders of the Nigerian banking industry. The Bank is moving beyond the traditional idea of employment as a nine‑to‑five job, consciously creating a culture where every staff member is seen as a potential leader in the making.

At the centre of this drive is the Conversion Programme, which allows eligible non‑core employees who have served for at least one year to transition into permanent roles. The initiative is designed to reward hard work and commitment with job stability, clearer progression paths, and a deeper alignment with the Bank’s strategic vision. For many staff, this means moving from temporary assignments to long‑term careers with the Bank, building confidence in their professional future.

The Bank is also running three flagship leadership programmes aimed at identifying and nurturing high‑potential talent across the organisation. The FirstBank Management Associate Programme (FMAP) is a 24‑month fast‑track initiative that grooms top young staff for middle‑management roles, with successful participants promoted to Assistant Manager grade upon completion. The Leadership Acceleration Programme (LAP) targets mid‑level managers to prepare them for leadership responsibilities, while the Senior Management Development Programme (SMDP) focuses on proven senior managers who are central to the Bank’s succession plan and long‑term strategy. These programmes are treated as structured career accelerators, equipping participants with the skills and mindset needed to lead in a rapidly evolving banking environment.

Supporting these efforts is FirstAcademy, FirstBank’s corporate university, which delivers structured learning aligned with the Bank’s strategic goals and industry demands. The Academy collaborates with global institutions such as Rome Business School and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), giving staff access to high‑standard programmes, often at subsidised rates, without leaving the Bank. This approach ensures that learning is continuous, relevant, and benchmarked against international best practices.

Recognising its people‑centred culture, FirstBank’s parent company, First HoldCo PLC, was ranked second in the Best Workplaces in Financial Services in Nigeria. Through its conversion opportunities, leadership‑development frameworks, and world‑class learning platforms, FirstBank is not only strengthening its workforce but also cultivating a generation of leaders who will shape the future of banking in Nigeria and beyond.
