Emergency teams have successfully extinguished a significant fire erupting from a Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited gas pipeline along Agege Motor Road, ensuring no damage reached surrounding homes, commercial sites, or vital facilities. Following urgent alerts via the state’s emergency hotlines, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) mobilised its rapid-response unit, reaching the Ile Zik location in Agege around 3:13 a.m. where the pipeline was fully ablaze.

Responders reported zero casualties or injuries, attributing the clean outcome to their immediate action in clearing the vicinity, establishing safety barriers, and shielding local residents, drivers, and adjacent fuel depots. Fire containment measures prevented escalation, as traffic authorities rerouted vehicles through alternatives like Old Abeokuta Road and the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway to minimise gridlock near the incident zone.

An inquiry into the fire’s origin is underway, led by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service in coordination with NNPCL technical experts. LASEMA Permanent Secretary Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu declared the scene stabilised, with state officials partnering NNPCL to isolate the line securely and perform a thorough structural review prior to resuming operations.

He stressed that safeguarding lives and assets is paramount, crediting Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s emphasis on advanced alert mechanisms. Motorists were advised to steer clear of the stretch, while panic purchases of petroleum products were discouraged amid assurances of uninterrupted supply. The public is encouraged to alert authorities to potential sabotage or irregularities via 767 or 112, with LASEMA promising a detailed incident summary upon completion of probes.
