Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has charged Team Delta to reclaim their top spot in sports at the Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) in Uyo Akwa-Ibom state. This call to action came as the NDSF torch made a stopover in Asaba, symbolizing the start of the festival.
The governor, represented by the State Commissioner for Works and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu expressed his administration’s commitment to grassroots sports development and youth engagement. He praised the NDDC for organizing the festival, emphasizing Delta State’s dominance in sports competitions nationwide.
Governor Oborevwori urged Team Delta to showcase their talents and make the state proud at the festival, citing the state’s rich history of producing world-class athletes. He noted that the presentation of the festival torch represents unity, resilience, and the boundless potential of the Niger Delta region.
The governor also highlighted the importance of sports in bridging divides, fostering friendship, and creating lasting bonds that strengthen the fabric of society. He emphasized his administration’s commitment to supporting sports development, investing in sports infrastructure, grassroots programs, and talent development initiatives.
Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, said the state had prepared adequately for the games, with a rigorous selection process that ensured only the most talented and dedicated athletes would represent Delta State at the festival. The team will compete in 17 sporting events in Uyo.
With the NDSF torch now in Asaba, Team Delta is poised to showcase their skills and reclaim their position as champions. As Governor Oborevwori said, “Delta nor dey carry last” (Delta doesn’t come last), and the team is determined to live up to this motto.
